How to calculate FD interest and maturity
For a cumulative FD using periodic compounding, the illustrative formula is Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t. P is the initial deposit, r is the annual decimal interest rate, n is the number of compounding periods per year and t is the duration in years. Estimated interest is maturity minus the initial principal.
Example: if you deposit ₹1,00,000 at 7% a year for five years with quarterly compounding, the estimated maturity amount is ₹1,41,478, including about ₹41,478 of interest. The calculator shows how the same nominal rate changes with monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly compounding.
How to use this fixed deposit calculator
Step 1: Enter the amount you intend to deposit once. Step 2: Add the annual interest rate from the bank’s current deposit product. Step 3: Enter the duration. Step 4: Choose the compounding frequency applicable to the product. Review the total maturity value, interest earned, effective annual yield and year-by-year growth.
Quarterly versus monthly FD compounding
For the same positive nominal annual rate and duration, more frequent compounding generally increases the estimated maturity value because interest begins earning interest sooner. However, a bank’s actual offer may quote an annualised yield, apply its own rounding rules or use actual calendar dates. A non-cumulative FD that pays interest into your account periodically works differently from a cumulative FD; this tool models the cumulative form only.
Why the bank’s FD maturity may be different
Your bank may use daily accrual, exact calendar dates, different treatment for incomplete compounding periods, minimum deposit rules, interest payouts or penalties for premature closure. The estimate is before taxes. Fixed deposit interest may be taxable and tax deducted at source can affect the amount received, depending on your circumstances. Always confirm the bank’s quoted maturity value and account terms. See HDFC Bank’s FD calculator guidance for a bank-provided comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is an FD maturity amount?
It is the estimated amount payable when the fixed deposit completes its agreed term, including the deposited principal and interest accrued under the product’s terms.
Is the interest rate on this page a live bank offer?
No. The default 7% is only a sample calculation. Enter the rate currently offered to you. Rates depend on bank, duration, deposit type, customer status and booking date.
Does quarterly compounding apply to every FD?
No. Many cumulative bank FDs use quarterly compounding, but the precise frequency, treatment of partial periods and payout options depend on the product. Select the relevant frequency or ask the bank for its maturity quote.
Does this FD calculator deduct income tax or TDS?
No. It presents pre-tax values only. Taxation varies by taxpayer, account type and applicable law, so the actual amount credited may differ.
