How recurring deposit interest is calculated
An RD is not a one-time deposit. Each monthly instalment earns interest for a different amount of time: the first deposit stays invested longest, and the final deposit earns the least. This calculator adds each contribution at the start of the month and projects its growth using either a monthly rate or the monthly equivalent of quarterly compounding. It sums all deposits and accumulated interest at maturity.
For the quarterly illustration, the equivalent monthly rate is (1 + annual rate ÷ 400)1/3 − 1. That rate is applied to the running value after each monthly contribution. Banks can use actual deposit dates and other conventions, so treat this as an estimate, not a bank statement.
RD worked example: saving ₹5,000 each month
Saving ₹5,000 per month for 36 months at a nominal 7% annual rate means total contributions of ₹1,80,000. With the start-of-month and quarterly-equivalent assumptions above, the estimated maturity value is ₹2,00,686, including roughly ₹20,686 in interest. Change the rate or term to see the effect immediately.
How to use the RD calculator
1. Enter the monthly amount you can reliably contribute. 2. Enter the annual rate provided by your bank. 3. Choose the duration in months. 4. Select the compounding model for comparison. View the total investment, earned interest, estimated maturity and a year-wise or month-wise growth table.
RD versus FD: which calculation do you need?
An FD calculator assumes you invest the principal once at the beginning. An RD calculator assumes repeated monthly contributions. Even at the same quoted rate, the maturity amounts differ because RD instalments have different earning periods. Use the FD Calculator for a lump-sum deposit and this tool for a regular saving plan.
Why actual RD interest can differ
Bank RD products can impose specific instalment dates, penalties for missed payments, minimum and maximum tenures, deposit ceilings and rules for premature closure. Actual interest may be rounded periodically or credited according to calendar dates. The calculator does not deduct tax or model instalment delays. For a bank example, see the Bank of Baroda RD calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I invest in an RD?
Total contributions are the monthly instalment multiplied by the number of months. Interest is additional and depends on the rate, timing and compounding method.
Are RD maturity amounts guaranteed by this calculator?
No. It is an illustrative forecast based on your inputs. A bank’s product terms and actual payment dates determine its final maturity quote.
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?
Some banks levy late-payment penalties or handle missed deposits differently, which can change the maturity value. This calculator assumes every instalment is paid on time.
Does the RD calculator show live bank rates?
No. The displayed 7% default is an example, not a current offer. Check the financial institution’s published rate for your exact tenure and account type before entering it.
