This tool estimates a single jewellery transaction at the GST rate you enter. It is not a tax invoice, valuation or jewellery-authenticity check. Check exact bill treatment, purity, HUID and buyback terms with the seller.
How the gold jewellery bill comparison works
For each shop, the tool first multiplies net gold weight × quoted price per gram. Making charges may be entered as a percentage of gold value or rupees per gram. You can add a separate percentage for wastage or value addition, enter other charges and deduct a quoted discount. The calculator then applies the GST rate you entered to the resulting illustrative transaction value.
For a simple jewellery supply, India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) explains that GST at 3% applies to the total transaction value of jewellery, even if making charges are shown separately. A seller’s invoice may contain separately classified goods or services with different tax treatment; check the actual bill. See the CBIC sectoral GST FAQ.
Worked example: two quotes for a 10-gram 22K ornament
Suppose both shops quote a 10-gram item of the same purity. Jeweller A quotes ₹10,000 per gram plus 10% making charges. Jeweller B quotes ₹10,200 per gram plus 8% making charges. With no other charges or discount and an illustrative 3% GST on the jewellery bill, A totals ₹1,13,300 while B totals approximately ₹1,13,465. The cheaper gold rate does not always mean the cheaper invoice—compare the total.
What to check before buying gold jewellery
Gold purity: Compare the same karat and fineness, such as 22K/916 or 18K/750. Enter a quoted rate that already corresponds to the selected purity; do not reduce a 22K shop rate again using a purity percentage.
Net gold weight: Ask for the weight of the gold itself when the article includes stones or other materials. Making charges: Determine whether the jeweller quotes a percentage, a per-gram amount or a fixed per-piece amount. For fixed charges, enter the amount in the other-charges field. Discount: Check whether it applies before or after tax in the actual invoice.
Hallmark and HUID: A bill calculation cannot establish authenticity. The Bureau of Indian Standards provides the BIS Care app with a Verify HUID function. Confirm the article markings and invoice before paying.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator automatically show today’s gold rate?
No. Enter the exact per-gram rate shown by each shop for the same purity. News or indicative market rates can differ from a retailer’s selling rate.
Does the calculator include jewellery making charges and GST?
Yes. It can compare making charges, wastage or value addition, extra charges, discount and the GST rate entered. The estimate is not a replacement for a compliant tax invoice or professional tax advice.
Can I compare 18K jewellery with 22K jewellery?
For a fair comparison, use the same purity and net gold weight in both quotations. Different purity or designs should not be compared based on final price alone.
Are HUID and gold purity verified here?
No. This calculator only compares prices. Use the official BIS verification process and the seller’s documented details to assess hallmark information.
