India head into the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton with the series already secured at 3-1, but the mood is more complicated than the scoreline suggests. New Zealand’s 87-run win in Auckland on 30 October was their first victory of the series and gave India several tactical questions to answer before the finale on 1 November.
Where the series stands
India won the first three T20Is in Christchurch and Wellington before New Zealand struck back at Eden Park. The fourth match was not a narrow correction: New Zealand made 259/7 and restricted India to 172/9. That result leaves India with an unassailable 3-1 lead, while New Zealand can still finish the series with back-to-back wins.
Why the Auckland loss matters
The headline number was New Zealand’s total. Glenn Phillips scored 107 from 49 balls and Michael Bracewell added 65 from 25, pushing the hosts to their highest T20I total. India had chosen to field, but the attack struggled once the middle overs accelerated.
India’s chase then suffered an immediate setback when Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were dismissed in the opening over. With wickets falling regularly, the required rate quickly became unrealistic. The result does not change the series winner, but it gives the team a useful stress test before the longer ODI and Test legs of the tour.
Three things India may review before Hamilton
- Powerplay stability: losing two wickets in the first over made a record chase even harder.
- Death-over plans: Phillips and Bracewell exposed how quickly the scoring rate can explode when lengths become predictable.
- Selection balance: India changed personnel for Auckland, bringing in Ishan Kishan and Mayank Yadav. The finale offers another chance to decide which combinations are worth retaining.
What New Zealand will take from the win
New Zealand finally converted an aggressive batting performance into a convincing result. Phillips’ century was the centrepiece, but Jacob Duffy’s 4/23 was equally important because it prevented India from building momentum in the chase. For the hosts, the final match is a chance to finish 3-2 rather than allow India to leave the T20I leg with a dominant 4-1 scoreline.
When is the 5th T20I?
The fifth T20I is scheduled for 1 November 2026 in Hamilton. The match is the final game of the T20I series before the tour moves into the ODI leg.
What to watch
The most important question is not whether India can still win the series—they already have—but whether the team can respond immediately to the Auckland defeat. For New Zealand, another strong batting performance would give the side momentum before the ODIs.
