BookMyShow Cancellation: Check the Deadline and the Refund Base Before You Confirm

Check booking eligibility, the show-specific deadline, and the refund amount and destination.

A change of plan does not automatically turn a confirmed cinema booking into a refundable one. On BookMyShow in India, first establish whether your particular booking can be cancelled, then check its deadline and the amount offered back. Those are three different questions.

The distinction matters before paying as well as afterwards. A cinema that allows cancellations may still retain part of the ticket price, and a refund expressed as a percentage of the base price need not include the rest of your bill. This guide uses BookMyShow’s official help pages checked on 26 October 2026; several pages carry older update dates, so compare them with the terms shown for your actual transaction.

Start with the cinema and the booking you actually made

BookMyShow’s ticket-cancellation guide says cancellation is offered by participating cinemas. Before booking, look at the cinema’s facilities for “Cancellation Available”. Keep the confirmation email, which can state the cancellation cut-off. Do not transfer a deadline from a different cinema to yours.

Already booked? Open Your Orders using the same email address or contact number used for the purchase. Select that booking and look for Cancel Booking. If it is missing, verify the account before assuming the purchase has disappeared or that a refund is available. The official guide also lists loyalty-point and split-booking exclusions.

For a group outing, nominate one person to check the confirmation before anyone buys replacement seats. A message saying “I cannot come” is not a cancellation record. Keep the original booking identifier separate from any new purchase so a support conversation can distinguish them.

A PVR example shows why the refund base matters

The official PVR cancellation help page, last marked updated on 21 August 2023, describes a 75% refund of the base ticket price when cancellation is at least two hours before the show. It describes 50% when cancellation is less than two hours but up to 20 minutes before showtime. It says booking fees are retained. These are the published help-page terms, not a promise that every current booking qualifies.

That page also specifies a limit of three movie-transaction cancellations in 30 days, exclusions for payback or loyalty points and split transactions, and refund of food and beverages purchased with the tickets. Check all those conditions against the booking’s own terms. A percentage by itself is incomplete information.

Here is a hypothetical calculation, not a ticket quote. If the eligible base ticket value is ₹800, 75% of that value is ₹600; 50% is ₹400. Multiplying the percentage by a larger checkout total would give the wrong answer if that total includes non-refundable booking fees. Evaluate food, discounts and other items according to the terms that actually apply, rather than folding everything into one guessed percentage.

Hypothetical ₹800 base ticket value gives ₹600 at 75% or ₹400 at 50%; other bill items are separate.

Before confirming cancellation, compare the displayed refund with the original itemised bill. If you cannot reconcile them, save the figures and ask support what each retained amount represents. Do not press through an unclear confirmation screen expecting the percentage to be corrected afterwards.

Choose the refund destination deliberately

BookMyShow’s refund help page distinguishes BMS Cash from a return to the original payment source. It states that BMS Cash refunds are processed within two hours, with credits valid for two years, while original-source refunds should appear within five to seven working days after processing. Gift-voucher payments are returned to the same voucher. These are the service’s stated timelines, not a bank-credit guarantee.

The practical choice is whether you want account credit for a later booking or money returned through the original payment route. Read the destination before confirming; the faster-looking option may be a different kind of value. Keep the cancellation confirmation and check the destination selected, rather than watching a bank account for a refund requested as BMS Cash.

If the stated period has passed, contact BookMyShow through its official app or support centre. Supply the booking identifier, cancellation confirmation, selected destination, date and amount expected. A clear transaction trail is more useful than opening several requests with conflicting descriptions.

A cancelled screening is a different situation

Separate “I no longer want these seats” from “the cinema has cancelled the screening”. The voluntary-cancellation percentages above should not be used to calculate a refund for a show that did not take place. Keep the venue’s notice, ticket and payment record, and ask the booking service to confirm the applicable refund and its status in writing. This article does not determine legal entitlement in an individual dispute.

Likewise, a debit without a confirmed booking needs a payment or failed-booking enquiry, not a cancellation request for seats that were never confirmed. Identify which event happened before choosing the support route. Avoid making a second purchase solely because a bank debit is visible; first establish whether the original booking exists.

Do not carry the cinema rule over to a concert

BookMyShow’s separate event, play, sport and online-streaming help page says cancellation or modification of confirmed bookings in those categories is unavailable. A cinema’s cancellation facility therefore does not establish the rule for a concert sold on the same platform. Read event-specific conditions, including any expressly offered protection or rescheduling terms.

For a family cinema trip, settle suitability before purchasing as well: our guide to India’s UA 7+, UA 13+ and UA 16+ classifications explains a separate decision that a cancellation policy cannot resolve.
